MARINE ELECTRONICS (START AND STOP GYRO)

NORMAL STARTING
This procedure will be used to start the Master Compass when the gyro wheel is not running.
Step 1. Check that all switches on the Transmission Unit are in OFF posi­tion and the Mode Switch on the Electronic Control is in OFF position.
Step 2. Position Electronic Control POWER switch to ON.
Step 3. Turn the Mode Switch to SLEW, observe the tilt meter:
If(+) SLEW to desired heading minus 20' If (-) SLEW to desired heading plus 20'
Step 4. Position the Mode Switch to START. Wait 10 minutes to allow the gyro wheel to come up to speed.
Step 5. Position the Mode Switch to AUTO LEVEL. Wait 30 seconds, or until the Compass Card stops moving or has small oscillations.
Step 6. Position the Mode Switch to RUN/SLEW. Use a bumping motion of the SLEW switch to level the gyro as indicated by the level meter.
Step 7. Place the Mode selector to RUN.
Step 8. Position the Transmission Unit POWER switch to ON. Synchronize each compass repeater and position each associated Repeater Switch on the Transmission Unit to ON.
Step 9. Set and maintain the N/S LATITUDE switch and 0-80 Latitude Con­trol on the Compensator Unit to the ship's latitude.
Step 10. As soon as the ship is underway, set and maintain the speed knots control on the Compensator Unit to the ships speed.


ROUTINE OPERATION
Although the operation of the Master Compass is automatic, the following checks should be made during each watch.
Step 1. Check the 0-80 Latitude Control on Compensator Unit and rm-:d as required.
Step 2. Check the N/S LATITUDE switch and reset as required.
Step 3. Check the SPEED KNOTS control on Compensator Unit and reset as required.
Step 4. Make periodic normal azimuth checks to verify the compass heading indication.
